01

Scope

Who's included

Any innovative or tech company based in the region, at any age: startups, scaleups and the acquired or closed companies that shaped the ecosystem (they stay listed, tagged as such). Support organizations get their own layers: accelerators and incubators, investors, coworking spaces and hubs, universities and research institutes, government and non-profit programs, and community groups.

Service businesses (agencies, consultancies, IT services), consumer brands without a technology product, and multinationals that only have employees here are left out. Every exclusion is written down with its reason.

02

Sources

How the data is collected

  1. 01

    Public sources only

Program cohorts and portfolios, ecosystem directories, local news and each organization's own website. Every fact on a profile links to the page it came from, with the date it was read: open Sources on any profile.

  2. 02

    Quotes checked word for word

Text is reused only after it's matched against the page it cites. Fields stay empty when no source states them.

  3. 03

    Polite crawling

Our crawler identifies itself, follows robots.txt, waits between requests and never touches sites whose terms forbid automated access. LinkedIn and Crunchbase are never scraped; a profile may link to them, nothing more.

  1. Step 1

    A public page

A cohort list, a directory, local news or the organization's own site.

  2. Step 2

    Read politely

robots.txt followed, the crawler named, pauses between requests.

  3. Step 3

    Quote matched

Text is kept only if it appears word for word on the page it cites.

  4. Step 4

    Office or home?

Property records decide. When in doubt, it counts as a home.

  5. Step 5

    A pin, or an area

Offices get a pin. Everything else stays approximate.

“A thin, true entry beats a rich, invented one.”

The rule every profile follows
03

Locations

Locations and privacy

A pin marks an office only when the address is public and property records show it isn't a home: the City of Edmonton's zoning, or where the zoning doesn't say, its property assessment, and in Strathcona County and Parkland County that county's land use. When in doubt, it counts as a home.

Otherwise the location is approximate: a neighbourhood, or just the municipality. A neighbourhood still gets a pin, with a faint circle for the area. An organization known only by its municipality is in the list but not on the map. That includes offices in the towns and counties whose property records can't be checked the same way yet.

A home address is never pinned, even when it's public.

  • Exact

A public office address that property records say isn't a home. A pin on the spot.

  • Area

A neighbourhood only. A pin and a faint circle for the whole area, never an address.

  • Municipality

Known only by town. Listed in the directory, not drawn on the map.

04

Verification

What “verified” means

  1. Unverified

Compiled from public sources and not yet confirmed by the organization. Most profiles start here.

  2. Community checked

Reviewed by a community moderator against its sources.

  3. Claimed

The organization proved control through an email address on its own domain, and can keep the profile current.

  4. Verified

    Checked by the map's maintainers.

05

Corrections

Corrections, claims and removal

Every profile links to three forms. Suggest an edit sends a field-level change to the review queue. Claim this profile lets people who work there take it over: an email address on the organization's own domain verifies them at once, and other addresses are checked by a person. Request removal covers the logo, the location or the whole listing; a logo disappears the moment it's requested, and other requests are reviewed by a person.
